Quality Curriculum
Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary School is built on quality teaching and learning practices with diverse curriculum opportunities
Teaching & Learning
At OLGC, we believe every child can thrive when teaching is purposeful, explicit, and grounded in evidence about how the mind learns. Our approach is shaped by Cognitive Load Theory (Sweller, 1988), which highlights how learning moves from working memory into long-term memory. This ensures that new knowledge and skills are built in ways students can understand, remember, and apply.
Our teachers design learning that:
● Builds knowledge step by step, moving from simple to complex and connecting to what students already know (Sweller, Ayres & Kalyuga, 2011).
● Minimises distractions, presenting information clearly and effectively so students can focus on what matters most (Chandler & Sweller, 1991).
● Promotes deep understanding, using strategies such as modelling, scaffolding, practice, and reflection to strengthen learning (Paas, Renkl & Sweller, 2003).
High-quality teaching at OLGC begins with clear instruction and carefully modelled examples. Teachers explicitly explain and demonstrate the skills and concepts students need to master, breaking learning into manageable steps. Responsibility is gradually transferred to students as they practise and apply their knowledge with increasing
independence (Rosenshine, 2012; Fisher & Frey, 2008). Through this structured and supportive approach, students at OLGC are equipped with the skills, confidence, and strategies to become successful lifelong learners.
It’s not the curriculum that we offer that sets us apart...
....it’s the manner in which it’s delivered. Our teachers actively and passionately explore the possibilities of making their teaching practice more innovative, engaging and fun at every turn. This is the single ingredient that drives the most growth in our students.
